The top 5 questions to ask before you sign up to an accountant:
1. Are we a good match?
To quote Karren Brady “People work with people”. It sounds obvious but you should enjoy working with your accountant. Not only do you have to get on but they also need to understand what your business needs are. Ask if they have similar sized clients, or expertise in your business sector? Have they advised companies at the same stage as you – eg: start-ups or developing businesses? And don’t forget to ask for a couple of references from existing clients.
2. Are they qualified with a recognised accounting body?
Anyone can call themselves an accountant but in practice they may not hold any professionally recognised qualifications. A qualified Accountant has to abide by certain ethical rules and keep their accounting and tax knowledge up to date. Their institute checks that they do this. Knowing your accountant is professionally qualified (like us!) gives you peace of mind.
3. Are they insured?
Every Qualified Accountant that has his or her own practice should hold Professional Indemnity Insurance to protect you as a client. Ask to see a copy of the certificate.
4. How do they charge you?
We offer a fixed fee agreed before work starts. Some accountants charge by the hour and can rack up quite a bill.
5. How can they help your business?
An accountant shouldn’t be just about preparing accounts and tax returns. As one client said an accountant should be your “critical friend”, one that can look from the outside at your business and suggest new ways to grow, develop and access new funds.
